Parkschap Nationaal Park De Biesbosch
Since January 1, 2011 there is one organisation for the national park: Parkschap Nationaal Park De Biesbosch. This organisation is based on a fusion between Nature and Recreation Authority The Hollandse Biesbosch and Nature and Recreation Authority National Park De Biesbosch. The aim of the authority is to protect the values of nature and landscape in the Biesbosch National Park and surrounding recreation areas and to develop, facilitate and manage different forms of (sustainable) recreation.
The municipalities of Dordrecht, Sliedrecht, Werkendam and Drimmelen and the Provinces of South Holland and North Brabant cooperate in the Parkschap. They work together closely with Staatsbosbeheer (State Forest Management)
The authority owns one of the largest visitor centres in the Netherlands (120.000 visitors annually): Biesboschcentrum Dordrecht (click here.). It houses an exhibition on the Biesbosch, an information desk, a souvenir shop, a multimedia presentation and a café.
Two solar powered boats for trips and excursions, one of which (Halve Maen) the largest tour boat in Europe, were especially built for the visitor centre. The centre has canoes and small electric boats for rent. A solar powered pedestrian ferry takes you in summer to a Biesbosch landscape full of cultural heritage.
The Consultative Committee National Park de Biesbosch has an independent Chairman assigned by the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food quality. The Consultative Committee is there to guide a development of the Biesbosch area as stated in the Management and Implementation Plan for Nationaal Park De Biesbosch. Main task is to preserve and develope nature and landscape values and on the other hand to develope sustainable recreation and toerism inside the Biesbosch area.
