Kick off meeting
Success for Kick-off conference STEP
On May 11, 2010, the kick off conference for STEP took place in Kruibeke, Belgium.
Around 70 participants joined the conference. Here you can find the invitation and the programme of the workshops.
Ignace Schops, Director of regional Landschap Kempen en Maasland, winner of the Goldmann Environmental Prize (2008) spoke about the importance of sustainable tourism. The success of the Kempen and Maasland Region was given as an example. Schops’advice: make nature sexy, take local entrepeneurs on an excursion and get them involved in branding your region. Patrick Meire, Professor at Antwerp University, spoke about the importance of biodiversity in general and the Scheldt particularly. By analysing the ingredients of an expensive dinner, he showed that not only Sole with its high market value should be protected, but that all small organisms on which Sole survives should be considered valuable. To conserve biodiversity an integrated strategy is necessary. Click here for presentation.
Before the workshops about central STEP-themes, there was a presentation about local STEP projects in the Biesbosch. Click here for the presentation.
Part of the day was used for workshops on the concept of sustainable tourism (presentation and results), visitor management (results) and public – private cooperation (presentation and results). The results of these workshops will be used in joint activities of the partners.
During lunch the house style of the STEP project was introduced.
A boat trip on the Scheldt, a walk in Lippenbroek and a cycle trip along the inlets and outlets that are being built to control flooding were part of the conference.
